    Information about the department

    Animal husbandry is a business that accelerates the rural economy by creating input for agriculture, social prestige of the individual and family unity. Livestock has always played a major role in keeping Maharashtra on the path of progress. The Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department has always been at the forefront in contributing to the development of a developed and advanced Maharashtra by taking care of the care, conservation and development of this livestock. The Animal Husbandry Department has consistently worked to involve every section of the rural community in the flow of all-round development even in its 150th silver jubilee. Due to the various schemes of the Animal Husbandry Department, the winds of development and progress have started blowing rapidly in the rural areas today. The Animal Husbandry Department has been working and committed through various initiatives and schemes to further accelerate the economic cycle of rural Maharashtra by implementing various schemes, research and animal husbandry activities through the White Revolution.

    The Animal Husbandry Department will remain committed to making the state a leader in the production of animal products, creating maximum animal husbandry industries and self-employment opportunities, promoting the growth of qualitative livestock rather than quantitative livestock, and increasing the prevalence of modern animal husbandry across the state through innovative technology.     • To ensure economic and nutritional development in the state through improved animal husbandry technology.
    • To bridge the gap between the demand and availability of animal products such as milk, eggs and meat in the state in view of the increasing population and through this to strengthen the rural economy and eliminate unemployment in rural areas.

    The main function of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Maharashtra is to formulate and implement a livestock policy for the state. This work is carried out by implementing various development schemes from plan and non-plan funds through various institutions and officials working under the department. The main functions of the department include the following important aspects:-

    1. Effective implementation of livestock production policies – To increase productivity by genetic improvement in livestock through artificial insemination.

    2. To increase animal products such as milk production, egg production, meat, wool by protecting livestock from diseases.

    3. To provide supplementary income and self-employment to rural farmers and needy beneficiaries by distributing milch animals, goat groups, poultry birds.

    4. To increase the availability of fodder and animal feed required for livestock.

    5. To produce vaccines required for livestock.

    6. To provide information on livestock breeding schemes to livestock farmers under publicity and promotion programs. Also to implement the State Training Policy.

    7. To provide necessary manpower and infrastructure facilities to modernize and accelerate animal husbandry services and administrative services.
